Home » Lawn Watering Guide
At Higher Ground, we believe great lawns start with smart watering — not guesswork.
Whether you’re nurturing new sod, maintaining a mature lawn, or caring for your overseeded Bermuda and Ryegrass, this page gives you the right plan for your specific lawn stage.
Each guide below is designed around Dallas-area soil conditions, climate patterns, and our soil-first science approach — helping you water wisely, save resources, and grow stronger turf all year long.
For established lawns
Keep your lawn healthy and resilient year-round with deep, infrequent watering. This method encourages strong roots, prevents runoff, and conserves water.
When to Water:
Early morning: 12 AM, 3 AM, or 6 AM — minimizes evaporation.
Watering Duration by System Type:
If city restrictions apply (e.g., 2 days/week), increase duration by 50% per cycle.
Fixed Spray: 5 min per zone
Rotor Head: 6 min
Tree Bubbler: 7 min
Drip/Soaker: 8 min
📘 Goal: Maintain healthy soil moisture balance and turf vitality through seasonal cycles.
Promotes deep root growth
Reduces disease risk
Improves drought tolerance
(First 30 Days After Installation)
Fresh sod needs consistent moisture to take root — too little and it dries out, too much and roots suffocate. Follow this schedule for strong establishment.
Day 1 – Right After Install
Water heavily, soaking soil 3–4 inches deep.
Run each zone 20–30 minutes (adjust for pressure/sprinkler type).
Fixed Watering Times:
10 AM, 2 PM, 6 PM
Cycle Duration:
Fixed Spray: 5 min
Rotor Head: 6 min
Tree Bubbler: 7 min
Drip/Soaker: 8 min
Weeks 1–4:
Keep top 1 inch of soil moist at all times.
Gradually reduce frequency in week 4 to prepare for deep, infrequent watering.
📘 Goal: Encourage root anchoring and soil integration without waterlogging new sod.
(Fall Transition Program)
Overseeding helps keep your lawn green and vibrant through Dallas winters. This guide ensures proper germination and balanced moisture for your Bermuda base and Ryegrass blend.
Stage 1 – Seed & Starter Fertilizer (Day 1–7)
Keep surface soil consistently damp but not puddled.
Light watering 3–4 times per day, 5–7 minutes each cycle.
📘 Goal: Activate germination and protect seed contact with soil.
Stage 2 – Early Growth (Week 2–3)
Water 2–3 times per day, 10–12 minutes per cycle.
📘 Goal: Support root development and prevent drying from cool winds.
Stage 3 – Root Establishment (Week 4–6)
Shift to once per day deep watering in the early morning.
📘 Goal: Transition seedlings into drought-tolerant, mature turf.
Stage 4 – Maintenance (After 6 Weeks)
